What is silicon nitride used for?
Silicon nitride ceramic materials have excellent properties such as high thermal stability, strong oxidation resistance, and high dimensional accuracy. Because silicon nitride is a covalent compound with high bond strength and can form an oxide protective film in the air, it also has good chemical stability, which is not oxidized below 1200 ℃. The formation of a protective film at 1200-1600 ℃ can prevent further oxidation and is not infiltrated or corroded by aluminum, lead, tin, silver, brass, nickel and many other molten metals or alloys, but can be corroded by magnesium, nickel-chromium alloy, stainless steel and other molten metals.
Silicon nitride ceramic materials can be used in parts of high temperature engineering, advanced refractories in metallurgical industry, corrosion resistant parts and sealing parts in chemical industry, cutting tools and cutting tools in mechanical processing industry, etc.
Because silicon nitride can form a strong combination with silicon carbide, alumina, thorium dioxide, boron nitride, it can be used as a bonding material to modify it with different ratios. For example, combined with SiC to form SI3N4-SIC refractory for blast furnace body and other parts, and combined with BN to form SI3N4-BN material for horizontal continuous casting separation ring. SI3N4-BN horizontal continuous casting separation ring is a kind of fine structure ceramic material with uniform structure and high mechanical strength. It has good thermal shock resistance and will not be wetted by molten steel.
Silicon nitride can also be used in solar cells. After plating silicon nitride film by PECVD method, not only can it be used as antireflection film to reduce the reflection of incident light, but also, in the process of deposition of silicon nitride film, the hydrogen atom of the reaction product enters into the silicon nitride film and silicon wafer, which plays a role in passivating defects. The atomic number ratio of silicon nitride here is not strict 4:3, but fluctuates in a certain range according to different process conditions, and the physical properties of the films corresponding to different atomic ratios are different.
Can also be used for ultra-high temperature gas turbines, aircraft engines, electric furnaces, etc.
Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a series of advanced engineering ceramics with high strength, high toughness, high hardness and excellent chemical and thermal stability.
What does silicon and nitrogen make?
Silicon nitride can be prepared by heating silicon powder between 1300 °C and 1400 °C in nitrogen:
3Si + 2N2→Si3N4
Silicon nitride refractive index
The refractive index of Si3N4 at 632.8nm is 2.02252.
